Bumper to Bollard: Good, Better, and Best Ways to Keep Cars Out of Your Building

By Guy Beveridge ·

Let me tell you a story. Years ago, my wife's business was in a leased building, and one quiet day, thankfully a day off, an older woman hit the gas instead of the brake and drove straight through the front window. No one was hurt, but the shock of seeing a car parked next to the uneven bars sticks with you.

We did what anyone would do: reached out to the property owner and asked for bollards, barriers, anything to prevent it from happening again. Their response? Nothing.

Fast forward a few years, and that same building has had three more crashes. The Dollar Tree next door still hasn't replaced the doors from the last one. You almost start to wonder if drive-thru convenience is part of the business model.

It's not just us. Over the past three years, crashes into daycares and activity centers have become frighteningly common. A daycare in Texas lost a teacher, and five toddlers were injured when cars collided into a play area. Another daycare in Ohio had a car go right through the wall. Tragically, nearly 15% of these crashes involve fatalities or serious injuries.

These aren't just headlines. They're real lives.

What Can We Do?

Good: Affordable Fixes to Get You Started

  • Concrete planters. Simple, functional, and a lot nicer to look at than steel posts.
  • Parking bumpers. These won't stop a speeding car, but they help drivers park safely.
  • Clear signage. “Slow Down” or “Watch for Pedestrians” signs.

Better: Mid-Level Protection

  • Non-crash-rated bollards. They'll handle a standard car at low speed.
  • Reinforced glass. It won't stop the car, but it will hold up better and reduce damage.
  • Reinforced planters or low walls. Both safety and aesthetics.

Best: High-Level Safety

  • Crash-rated bollards. These can stop a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling at 50 mph.
  • Retractable barriers. Perfect for areas with heavy traffic or controlled access.
  • Perimeter walls and barriers. Maximum protection.

Why It Matters

This isn't just about protecting your building. It's about protecting people. Your staff. Your kids. Your community. Whether you're planting flowers in a concrete barrier or installing crash-rated bollards, every step you take makes a difference.

Not sure which level fits your building and your budget? Our facility security assessments include vehicle barrier recommendations matched to your traffic patterns, your entrances, and the people you protect.
